I used to do them the same way you describe, but unfortunately the quick steel can fail. Not often, but it can. Ive started to do them a new way where its blocked by a threaded set screw that is lock-tited in. That means theres no chance of failure of the plug.

With my cut I dont get any muddier than I did on my old warrior with full fenders. I think it all depends on your riding style really. Though I do have an almost full set now that Im gonna put on, but Im keeping the cuts. That way I can switch back and forth depending on the look Im in the mood...
