Advancing the spark timing always helps. With a stock piston it will be ok without any issues. When you put it with a higher compression piston, you need to be careful. More compression and increased spark timing can lead to detonation. That can be alleviated by using higher octane fuel.
 
That's what I figured. Right now I have a .20 over yamaha piston in it (got the engine used, was in there already). Will be putting in 10.25 wiseco probably next weekend. Only going to use supreme in it. Head's already been shaved .015". I will prob just leave it stock timing.
 
I run a .040 wiseco with a droped head its running11:1 with this key no worries its wen your around12:1 that it gets sketchy

I try to buy my atv fuel at stations that have ethanol-free gas. It seems to have a better shelf life. Also seems to run better. My old 84 carbureted truck seems to like it as well. My 96 GMC fuel injected 4.3 doesn't seem to care what I put in it, though.

When I hit the dunes I either add Blendzall or do a mix of Sunoco 110 and 91.
 
I may put it in then. It's cheap to do anyway. Right now my head is shaved .015", putting the wiseco in next weekend or one night this week, and using the cometic est gaskets. If I'm not mistaken the est head gasket is .007" thinner then the stocker. So I should be right around 11-1. And yeah, that ethanol gas sucks! I remember when a bike could sit for 6mos without gas going stale. Now they sit for 6 weeks and you're cleaning green slim out of the carb. Nasty!
 
I have one in my Raptor, noticeable differance down low. But remember what ever you gain down low... you will loose on the top end. If you are trail riding, it's a good thing, but if your riding wide open leave it alone. The keyway and a 12 tooth sproket really woke my bike up on the twisty tails I ride on, I don't have to shift as often because I can run in a higher gear and have the power to pull it.

The timing key doesn't affect the low end like you are talking. It advances the spark timing and that is across the whole rpm range. You definitely feel it in the low end snap, but it does not limit the upper end power like the drive chain does. The power increase is there through the whole RPM range.
