Hi I'm new to the site. (nice and helpful site by the way). OK I JUST GOT A 98 WARRIOR. THE GUY SAID IT NEEDS A CLUTCH BATTERY AND TIRES. FINE I ORDERED A CLUTCH AND GOT A BATTERY. I AM WONDERING IF EVEN THOUGH THE CLUTCH IS BAD SHOULD IT STILL SHIFT THROUGH THE GEARS WITH THE ENGINE OFF OR DOES IT HAVE TO HAVE A GOOD CLUTCH /ENGINE RUNNING TO SHIFT THROUGH THE GEARS. I CAN GET IT TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL 1ST AND 2ND WITH TE ENGINE OFF. IS THIS RIGHT OR DO I NEED TO CRACK THE CASE FURTHER THAN THE CLUTCH. ALSO I PULLED THE OIL FILTER AND THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS IN IT IF THIS HELPS WITH YOUR DIAGNOSTICS ANY. THANKS IN ADVANCE
JON

First, welcome to the site. Second, you won't really be able to tell anything about the clutch until you get it running. It will change gears regardless of the clutch's condition when it's not running, heck it would work if the clutch was completely missing. Once you get a battery in it you should be able to tell from riding it. How worn the clutch actually is will determine how noticable it is. Sometimes they will only slip when you're wide open throttle at high rpms, that's how mine was when it started going out. The worse it gets, the easier it will be to make it slip. Like if you're in first gear and you rev it up and let the clutch out quick, but the quad doesn't abruptly take off, the clutch is probably slipping pretty bad. Or if when you hit the gas the rpms climb quickly but you don't accelerate as fast as it seems it should.

How many metal shavings were in the filter, and are they aluminum or steel (check with a magnet). Either way, if it's not a ton of shavings, it's probably not anything to worry about too much. I've had them every time i've changed my oil for the 4 years i've owned my warrior, and haven't had anything inside the engine or trans give me trouble yet. Usually steel shavings come from the gears, and aluminum ones come from the normal wear and tear of the clutch plates sliding on your clutch basket.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. The matal was aluminum. It was alot but like i said i just got the bike and i have no clue when the last time the oil was changed. What do you think would make me not be able to shift out of second gear then?? Also i have already started cracking the cases. my question is do i HAVE to pull the stator FLYWHEEL to split the cases enough to get into get into the tranny ??? And if i do what else could i use to pull the flywheel besides the $60 flywheel puller that ill only use once??? Thanks in advance
Jon

I honestly don't think you have any reason to be splitting the cases yet, you haven't even rode the thing yet, right? You can't just assume there's something wrong with the transmission just because it won't go higher than 2nd gear while sitting still without the engine even running. These transmissions are designed for the gears to be spinning while you shift, otherwise they don't always mesh right, which is most likely why you can't get it to go any higher. Trust me, just try riding the thing before you try fixing something that might not have anything wrong with it.

Ok Thanks for the advice. I will try riding it and get back to you and let u know what happens. Like i said this is my first warrior and with all other quads and dirtbikes i've had i have never had the problem of it not shifting with the engine off. But i will take your advice and try it as soon as the clutch gets in. Thanks for all your help. Will get back soon.
