Okay my bike smokes a bit when it first starts, only for the first 3-5 mins. So im thinking my valve seals are messed. How much are new valves seals cost, how hard are they to put in. Also do i need a special tool to do this?

Thanks FRN

If it's the first 3-5 mins it could just be the engine getting up to temperature. Mine does that too, but I don't worry.

It also does it when i wheelie and have it revin high when i wheelie but im pretty sure its because the breather vent that goes into the air box is lettin some oil out and its getting sucked in. Im probably going to do them and get the valves adjusted.

No it's really not normal for the bike to burn oil cold or hot. It could be the piston rings/cylinder as well.

if you see excessive crankcase pressure coming out of the breather that tells me the rings are worn.

It better not be the rings... i just spent $700 for yamaha to put a new piston/rings in about 2 months ago. Now that i think about it, it smoked more when i got it back from Yamaha. It smoke real bad at first but he said it was just some cleaner they put in.

How much smoke, and how long?

How many hours (best guess) on the engine?

No clue i bought it used. Well at idle it will be very little to no smoke. if you rev it up will its cold it will put out a fair bit of smoke. Only does it when is cold for the first couple of mins. Also it does it a bit when i wheelie and get into the high RPMs

rings never seated I bet and maybe they didn't hone/deglaze the cylinder when they did the rebuild.
After I did mine it smoked for maybe 30 seconds as some of the oil was burned off the top of the piston and **** from installing it. After that I can start it cold and it doesn't smoke at all.

Okay it hardly does it now but. Ive got some oil on the top of the cylinder right in front of the Exhaust valve. Any ya'll now where it could be coming from?

like on the top of the piston your talking or on the outside of the head? Is it coming out of the valve cover or head gasket? Picture would do wonders.

Hmmm..... might want to try a simple deglaze 1st.... A little smoking on startup isnt to unusual for any 4-stroke engine. Try this....

Dump the oil you have now, leave the filter (no need to change it for this).

Use 1/2 quart of Castrol 30w HD (make sure it is straight 30w, NOT 10w30, and it MUST have "HD" on it), and the remaining oil to capacity any basic 10w40 dino oil (Castrol GTX or Quakerstate will work fine).

So if the total amount without filter change is 2.6 quarts:

.5 quart 30w HD
2.1 quarts of 10w40

Go ride the piss out of it for a good solid couple hours (no more than 4 though), then do a normal oil and filter change with your favorite stuff.

While youre riding, the shifting might feel a little clunkier than usual, but thats normal for this, so dont worry about.

That will deglaze the cylinder, and unstick any rings, and get rid of any other crap in there. Its cheap and easy to do, if it fixes it, then cool.... if it doesnt, then youre only out a couple bucks of oil.

Yeh that a good idea, I'm going to put the oil cooler on so i will throw a bit of that 30w HD oil in.

Well, make sure you do it exactly the way I specified, otherwise it will accomplish nothing, or gum up stuff if you keep it in there too long.

Okay thanks man i put 1/2 quart of 30HD oil in it and it smoked for maybe like 2 seconds then it was fine. I even jumped on the gas real hard and normally it looked like a two stroke but it was fine. Gonna see if it does it when i wheelie. But thanks alot Griff. Sunday we have a hard dune ride planned which should be 3hrs of hard riding so that should do it.
