I second PineyPower's suggestion to run it through the gears before you assemble the halves. Too much work involved to go back in if it's not right.

Be sure that reverse lever is not out of adjustment or something else with it. If the throw is off on it, it will not fully engage and you'll be stuck between R and F. Had the same issue on my 00 Warrior and it was due to floppy linkage on the lever.

Sounds like the timing might be off. Double check your timing marks. Does it spit back through the intake.
