I have an 87 Warrior. It has a pull start on it, and an electric start too. The battery has a reading of over 12 on a multimeter. Try starting it using the start button, and it does nothing. If I reach down and pull the pull rope out a little ways, and then push the start button, it turns over like it's going to start, and then sounds like the battery is running down and it stops turning over. What could it be? Any help is greatly appreciated.:atv:

Just because the battery has good voltage doesn't mean that it is capable of starting an engine. You'd have to make sure that the cold cranking amps are up to snuff. Have you tried hooking jumper cables or a jump box directly to the starter to see if it will turn over? Remember, leave one cable clamped to the starter, and only touch the other to engage it. Don't leave the cables hooked up, you'll damage it.

Well pat just told ya how to check your starter! Check it before you run out and buy one!

Well you should just go with that and disregard everything Pat asked you. I'm sure the guy you talked to really knows his ****.

I was just saying what a good friend of mine told me, MS Warrior. A GOOD mechanic, that has had years of working on Warriors. He said it COULD be that, like I said, not that it was that. You need to not be a jerk. You don't even know me. I've already charged the battery back up, and it still does the same thing. But, thanks for your take on things :D

Charging a battery doesn't put cca in it just an FYI. I'm not a jerk I tell it like I see it. People come on here everyday. Ask a question till their bike is fixed then are gone. It's the way of the forum world. What I really don't like is people putting up questions and getting sound advice and not even acknowledging the stranger that took the time to help them. So no I don't know you. I'm not a jerk it just is irritating when when we help a newb and they would rather listen to a buddy then us. Remember you came here for help. So who is really being a jerk?

Doubt the starter is in a bind.
You have to think about the components that make up the system.

1/ source of power. That's the battery, what's it's condition? How are the connections?

2/start switch. When you push it what does it do? In your case it does something, the motor kinda spins. Not the problem. If no action it must be broken down into a whole other control circuit.

3/ solenoid. Does it click when you push the start button? Yours does, the motor turns over.

4/ starter. What does it do when you push the button? Yours turns slowly. Might want to remove it and check it out.

5/ starter clutch. Does your starter freewheel when you push the button? Does it make clunking sounds when you run the bike?

6/ all of the cabling. What's the condition? How are the ground connections? Grounding issues haunt these bikes.

Some people troubleshoot from the source forward when tracking electrical problems, some from the end component back, I pick the middle and move one direction and move half the direction toward the problem each jump.
Don't get discouraged it'll be an easy fix.

Just the basics here no more. Hope it might help in understanding the simple starter circuit. No magic here. Just need to know what each part is and how it works.
