anyone know how long average 2 strokes can go between rebuilds, especially a 250r

yeah, i figured it depended on that. lets just say 10 hours a month with moderate riding

i havent found one locally, but we would take a trip to pick one up. i just dont know if we have the "know-how" to maintain one. i have seen quite a few in the past couple of months online going for great prices.

They can go a long time really. But once a year is a good remedy to follow, unless something goes wrong. 2 strokes are pretty damn reliable, just a Require a rebuild once in a while. If they do mess up they are a shitload cheaper than a 4 stroke thats for sure. They are also 10 times easier to work on.

although they dont cost half as much as a 4 banger to rebuild.. i was at the track today with 2 MINT modded 250r's.. man, they were fast.

if you run good oil, it help ALOT in a 2 stroke. 2 strokes are really easy to work on, i had never opened or worked on a motor before and i rebuilt the topend by my self.

yeah, i've heard a lot of people who have no experience working on motors are able to rebuild 2 strokes. very few moving parts, as i'm told.

yep, if its maintained well and not romped on every ride she'll last

You gotta romp on them pretty often, keeps em cleaned out. haha. They can take it though, they are made to rev. Theres nothing to them. Basic design. A topend rebuild consists of very few parts. Piston, Wrist pin, wrist pin bearing, gaskets, thats about it. On a good day you could fully rebuild the topend in an hour or less

I am an engineer for a company that makes their own 2 stroke. If properly cared for, our engine will run in excess of 1,000 hours without issue. I should know because I endurance test about 10 per year in an application harsher than an ATV. Using the right oil is the key. Use only the oil specified by the manufacturer. Last year we did an endurance test on different types of 2 stroke oil and some 4 stroke oil. It make a huge difference in the life of the motor. By the way, you only have to rebuild when the compression gets low. Rebuilding before that is a wast of money. Oh yeah, rebuilding a 2 stroke is a peice of cake. No cam, no valves, no lifters. Just piston, rings, wrist pin and a cylinder hone. My next quad will probably be an LT250.
