I just installed my raptor 660 rear shock today, and I came across an issue. The chain constantly rides on the lower chain roller, and on the first ride the roller tore apart took off down the road by itself. Did I do something wrong with the installation that the chain is constantly on the roller, or did this happen on everyone else's? I wanted to make sure I didn't overlook anything before I got the sawzall out.

I have the 01 660r rear shock to. I don't even use a chain roller. But I pretty sure it was suppose to be on the chain at all times.

My '87 w/ an '01 raptor shock had a lower roller, but it was a very small diameter white plastic one. The roller was trashed, and I went to the Yamaha dealer for a replacement. They sold me an MSR ball bearing & urethane roller which was much larger in diameter and didn't fit on the stub shaft sticking out from the frame.

I ended up cutting the shaft off w/ a hacksaw. There was an existing hole where the stub shaft was and I tapped that for 5/16-18 threads and installed the new roller w/ a bolt, nut and washer.

My chain was pretty tight with the larger roller, so I loosend it a little (about 2 turns on the adjuster nuts). The chain has contact with the roller, but it not putting excessive pressure on it.

I thought about cutting the roller off completely, but I decided to try it with the roller.

About your chain-it should be all-right,the shock is longer, making the rear end higher(actually rides alot better that way I think)For the roller get the one from modquad-they are cheap-and take out the ball bearing. You will see that the plastic roller will slip over the shaft on the frame. Then put a large washer and bolt into the threads over the roller-works realy well ;D
