hi im new to the forum but anyways i jus bought this warrior a couple of weeks ago. When i push the start button the solenoid just clicks i know the starter is good because i hooked it straight to the battery and it was spinning, also wen i pull start it i hear like a grinding noise coming from the engine..........im kind of new to working on atvs but any help would be appreciated

since you said you know the starter is good I would start checking your grounds, and make sure your battery is good

battery is brand new and i already wire brushed grounds
i havent tried push starting it yet

first off welcome to the site. the more information we know the better the chance we can solve your problem so lets start with some questions.

if its just sparking when jumping the solenoid then the starter may have a dead spot and is bad or more likely the wire leading to the starter is grounding out on the frame. if you take the starter off and jump it to a battery does it spin correctly?

you said you tried push starting and pull starting it. will the bike start?

if not does the engine seem to lock up at a certian point?

since you mentioned griding does the engine even have compression?

starter does spin correctly when jumped to battery

bike does not start and engine does not lock up but its kind of hard to pull start it also it does have compression

ok i got the starter to spin 2 or three times jumping the solenoid so i know the solenoid is bad......but starter seem to struggle to turn over engine

the starters on these bikes dont exactly spin the motor over easily even when there new but i wouldnt put it out of possibility that the starter needs to be replaced.

now if your sayin that it does turn over you need to check three things: compression, fuel, and spark.

you said that its hart to pullstart so compression is probably good but if you have acess to a compression tester i woud suggest checking that the reading is within spec just to be sure.

as for fuel id take the carb apart and clean it thoroughly as it cant hurt things to have the carb good and clean. theres several differnt threads on this in the tutorials section if you arent already fimilar with the inside of the carb. jetting could potentially cause the bike not to start but i doubt thats your problem as jetting has to be really far off to keep the bike from starting.
also id make sure you have some good fresh gas in the tank as old gas tends to clog things up.

as for spark you can do the primitive method of touching the plug to the head and cranking it over and visually checking for spark. also a weak battery can keep the engine from starting so make sure its good and charged. beyond that your going to need to start checking components one by one (stator, ingnition coil, switches, wires, etc.) for that your going to need a service manual and a multimeter. id highly recommend getting a factory yamaha manual as it has much better information than other brands.

ok thanks for the info....i was thinking about taking the engine apart because of the grinding noise but i guess its normal, i have not actually tried to turn it on because its so hard to pull it im scared to rip the rope

im going to just order a new starter, any suggestions on where to get parts from?

I'm assuming it having a pull start, its an early model. Are you using the decompression lever on the head when you try to pull start it?

yea it is a 89 model........its the one infront of the head right?

i was wondering what that lever was for because all it said on it was on with a arrow

I would try to pull start it with a rope and a truck/car anything and see if it starts. It will help narrow down problems if you know it will run

ok now im tryin to start up and im getting no spark. im thinkin its maybe my ignition coil
