Has anybody ever done this? I am thinking about doing mine to save some money have done hours of reading sites and forums, looking at manuals, and kinda haveing second thoughts. I can have mine fixed for 650 with exchange, but will have to do the R&R though. But I can get a master kit and all the electrics for about 250. So I am stuck to what I should do, I haven't really been inside a tranny, but would like to learn how, but don't want to mess it up worse or have to spend more money to have it done again because I missed something or can't get it back together again.

From what I can find in sites and online manuals, it doesn't look to hard just alot of parts. So after I get my truck home this weekend to start the R&R and decide what I want to do will give me more time to think about it. I may just be better off to take to the 650 exchange guy thats been doing this for years, come back and put it back in and be rolling.

There is some stuff I did read about some fixes to do, one is remove the load release springs or boost springs to keep from burning the 3-4 clutch pack since this is what mine has done, and to build the pump to a 13vane pump for better volume. This stuff is what has me worried since I don't know anything about tranny's.

they also make aftermarket valve bodies and such to help get fluid where it needs to go and also make for smoother shifting and all that ****

Yea same here, it looks fairly easy but all the parts kinda got more looking to have somebody else to do it.

I know they got stuff out there in aftermarket parts, but I do alot of heavy hard driving racing or hot rodding, its just a basic get around truck. So I don't really need expensive aftermarket parts.

they arnt hard but you will need a lot of tools that you probley dont have, like a special press to compress the piston in the rear of the trany and remove the snap ring. also i think you have to remove the valve body in order to acces a bolt that hold the 3&4 gear band in place, when you do this there will be some check balls on top MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE THEY GO! other than that just do every thing in order and take a lot of pics during the process so you can look back if tou need to

Yea the valve body has me kinda worried, I don't have specail tools just basic screwdrivers some wrenches, and sockets. I might be able to make a press, but more I think about it, it take more time effort money to get the tools to do a one time rebuild when it will be easier and faster to take out go get another and slap it back in and be rolling.

very true! when you do this make sure to ask about the warranty, some builders will not waranty a trany if they dont put it in.

Well this one guy I think he does have one with his, I did find another that was rebuilt a guy does them in his garage, he did the fixes in it for 250 bucks.

Do yourself a favor and have someone with the know how do it... Auto trans are doable but as stated it takes special tools...a nice super clean area to work and lay everything out... and there are a ton of small parts in that valve body to screw you... you kinda wanna learn on a unit that isnt expected to be put back in and driven with no problems ... good luck

Yea I have seen some pics of one being built and there is ALOT of parts. I am trying to find someone that does this that can show how and help so I can learn. But still make take it and exchange for 650 with another guy for one ready to go, and be rolling faster. And yes that valve body has me worried the most of it all, all the rods, pistons, springs, damn check balls.

yeap alotttt of parts, not extremly complicated though, just dont pay sooo much attention that you forget to put simple things in, like the band for instance which one of the guys i work with did today lol, as soo as he bolted the pump on he relized it though
