I am guessing that that is not good and needs replaced. I am referring to the slot being egg shaped. I checked part numbers and am pretty sure that I have to replace it with one specifically for a 87 as one off of a 95 has a different number and doesn't look the same. So, is this gear junk? Do I need to replace it with a 87 specific gear? thanks.
OK, I just found one for a 88 on ebay and it is egg shaped on the backside also. So I don't know if this is normal or not. Now I am really confused.

Ok, found out the egg shape is bad, that gear is junk. Still wondering if gears from a newer model are interchangeable. Was told by a dealer yes, he thought, but there may be an issue with back spacing. I don't see how as long as they are the same thickness. Has anyone swapped them? Will it work?

I think you'd be fine with a newer one. Hell get one from a '99 as it will def fit that cam and the timing should line up the same. As long as the gear seats on the cam, you should be fine. I should of sent my gear with the cam. lol

Glad I took it apart. I had no idea that it was messed up. The bolt that holds the gear on was even loose. I've been looking all afternoon and can't find why a newer model year one won't work. The gears are the same thickness, same size, the newer ones just don't have the plastic on the front and back surface. I can't see what that plastic is for or what it even does. I had to make a puller out of plate to get the cam out. Once it came free it pulled right out.

I checked part numbers on Rocky Mountain ATV and the first 3 are different but the rest are the same. I just talked to a mechanic at a local dealer, he's been there as long as I can remember, and he said he has used the ones designated for 2nd gens on 1st gens and never had any trouble. He said the gear on the first gens goes all the way back to early 80s 4 stroke dirt bikes and that was just the design yamaha had at the time. The design for the 2nd gens was used throughout just about all yamaha 4 stroke off roaders from 89 to present. The design for the 2nd gens just has less mass because it doesn't have the extra plastic on it. He said he never replaces the old style with another old style, he goes for the newer one. So I ordered one. I will see if he is right I guess.

The gear was probably walking from the loose bolt and wore the teeth. I know mine doesn't look like that but looks don't matter. Check make sure the old cams are the same I'm sure they are. As long as it's same diameter and same teeth number your good. I don't think they changed offset until the raptor

I may have a gear if you need one frit, Ill have to look though. Its been about a year since I looked thru my extra warrior parts.

^ Thanks 1998,but I ordered one today. I am just glad I found these issues today as opposed to them introducing themselves to me later.
I guess this day will end on a good note, UPS delivered my raptor clutch cable and mount today. I guess I can put that on while I wait for the new cam gear to get here. Maybe I can fix my welder and finish making mounts for the heel guards.

You'll love that. I did the raptor clutch mod. Holy **** it's easy. I can 1 finger the clutch now.

^ my stock set up is pretty easy already, can't wait to see how easy it is after I change the clutch and add the extra steel plate, but that will wait till I need a new clutch.

I have heavy duty springs extra plate with ebc clutch. It took almost 2 hands to pull it was nuts. 1 finger now.
