Can't go in forward when in reverse while running

I can go to reverse no problem but it won't go back to forward when it's running, it will only go back if the motor isn't warmed up. What could it be? I can shut it off and it will go in forward right away.

My friends was like that and he adjusted the linkage and it fixed the problem.

I have to be in gear and let out the clutch a little to get my 87 in or out of reverse. It's been this way for 20 years!
