i have heard that you only need to use the clutch when taking off. by accident, i was riding and forgot to pull in the clutch when shifting. i am guessing that doing that cant be good on the tranny. i could be totally wrong. any opinions?

Upshifting is bad on the tranny, but not so much when downshifting. To greatly help shifting while using the clutch you should get a ez pull pro perch clutch lever, it'll make it just as fast as not using the clutch. For the warrior you don't even need to pull the lever in all the way, just a small amount to release the clutch spring pressure. The aftermarket lever comes much closer to the bars so you don't even need to barely reach out to it, it's very quick compared to stock.

Now that I have time to elaborate on this further here I go:

If done correctly the tranny doesnt care, however on the high powered racebikes, the clutch will last longer, your not giving it a chance to breath in oil, when your pulling the clutch, it lubes itself in the oils that are present in the cases. no self respecting drag racer has EVER used the clutch outside of first - just do it smooth.

As far as the mechanicals go, bikes use what is called a constant engagement type tranny, in other words the gears are constantly meshing. However on a car with syncros the gears not in use are NOT turning;
try shifting your car without the clutch, some cars do it but if they do shift its very slow.

I never use the clutch, up or down, except starting of course. You just shift as normal, blip the throttle on down shifts just as you would do if you used the clutch; it takes a little practice but you get smooth at it and its perfectly safe.

i never use clutch on the upshift either, but I always use it on the downshift, when I shift up, I just put a little pressure on the shifter and let off a tiny bit on the throttle and it feels like it shifts by itself. But do whatever makes you feel comfortable

You can "float" in cars too...lol. I used to drive a truck and it is easier to float gears than it is to double clutch. I got used to it then and realized I was floating the gears in my ranger coming home...lol I drove 45 miles home one day and realized when I got there that I had only used the clutch to stop at red lights and stop signs.

if you plan to shift without a clutch in a car or quad, just accelerate, let off the gas and up shift. if your syncros are in good condition on a car, they should go in nice and slow

The more you do it, the more you'll get used to it. To downshift, just race the motor a little and barely hold the shifter against the gear to feel for the right time. It's not so easy in a car, but can be done easily when you get used to it.

thanks for everyones input. it isnt that i mind pulling in the clutch. honestly, when i'm riding hard, i am probably not even pulling in the lever enough to do any good. my brother and i both said the same thing after each of us gave her hell one day riding together. as far as the ez-pull goes, the warrior is the first quad that i've ridden that is a full manual and doesnt bother me at all. i know that a lot of people talk about how hard the clutch lever is on warriors, but since i am ignorant and havent ridden anything else, i dont know any better. just put in a new drc and it still seems easy enough to shift. now my right forearm and thumb is another story. by the way, death, thanks for putting in the time to respond to my initial question. i appreciate it.

My first car was a 68 VW Baja Bug. With that I could just get the engine to the right RPM range and pull the shifter- *click*, *click* into gear she went, every time.

I loved taht car!

ahhhh......Glory Days!
