i am getting ready to ATTEMPT to build a stroker motor for my warrior. i found a place online that does all the head work for $599. here is what they will do......
stage II porting
1mm over kibblewhite black diamond intake valve
stage I hotcam
kibblewhite spring kit
top end gasket set
multi-angle valve job
valve guides checked
new valve stem seals
remove/install cam
set valve lash
gasket surfaces prepped

i have no idea how much the machining costs but if i bought the parts individually, here is what that comes to.....

powroll midrange or race cam $135 after core refund
valve springs $100
1mm over intake valve $55
exhaust valve $55
that totals only $345 just for parts

does anyone have any idea about how much porting etc etc averages or is it worth spending the extra $245 to send it off to that other place?

It seems like a decent price however, you should be able to do all the motor work yourself except for the porting. Porting requires great skill, knowledge, and a flow bench to test your porting. I'd say take the head to get the porting and oversized valve done but install the parts yourself, its not too difficult if you have some basic mechanical skills.

Take a look at the pics from my rebuild...

i know we wont be doing ANY machining. when my pops was younger, he was a mechanic and has restored a couple of cars over the years. the only thing that he hasnt done, was tear into a motor. it will be a new experience for both of us, but we are both mechanically inclined and a little 4-stroke seems like a good way to learn. much easier than a 426 hemi for a couple of first timers. i would much rather do all the work, other than machining myself. it looks like it will be about half the price if done ourself. since you have rebuilt your motor, i'm sure i will be PM'ing you once i get started.

in the motor that is in the quad, i put in an ebc dirt racer clutch. i will probably go with a higher end clutch on the stroker. have you installed your dirt digger yet? i'm guessing that they install in a similar way.

anyways, thanks for your input. i'll keep you posted.

Yep I got my dirt digger in, only 2 rides on it so far, installation is straight forward just make sure that you set the plates up the same as the stock ones, mine also came with heavier clutch springs which were also an easy swap, just make sure you have a 27mm socket to remove the pressure plate(?). The performance advantage is huge, much better hook up, an aftermarket clutch is a must for a worked engine. But, anyways, its a pretty simple procedure for the whole thing, a shop manual will be an asset when doing motorwork (it has all the torque specs and sequences). But if you do get stuck just PM me, or shoot me an e-mail (ratchattack at hotmail dot com) and I'll try to help

i picked up the clymer manual when i first got my warrior, but i might order the yamaha service manual. sounds like the dirtdigger clutch is the same proceedure as the dirt racer clutch we installed. already have the 27mm. ran into that problem the night we started it. luckily autozone was open for another 10 minutes. i'm just wondering how much better the dirtdigger is compared to the dirt racer. it was only about 70 bucks plus shipping. i'm not gonna half-ass anything or cut any corners. if you're gonna do it, do it right.

other than the tool for the rings, are their any specialty tools needed for the rebuild?

You'll need a torque wrench, valve spring tool, rubber mallet, its also a good idea to hone out your cyclinder with a hone brush, a feeler guage, can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Just wondering are you going to change the piston as well?

since it's gonna be a stroker motor, i'm changing the crank, rod and piston. i'm looking at a lot of the similar parts that death used on his stroker, when he had it. he said he was able to get 38-39 hp out of it. that's what i'm shooting for when everything is all said and done.

38-39 horse? damn, now I'm thinkin of a stroker kit...lol...let us know how the install goes, and remember to gimmie a shout

i'm going with the kit that death used and recommended. powroll.com and a few others have different stroker kits. some are bigger than the 400. death didnt recommend those because of having to keep the rpms down with those. also another good thing about going with the hotrods kit, you dont need to get your crankcase machined. obviously you still have to get it bored, but that isnt a biggie. powroll stated that an increase of 20% or more you need to install stiffer clutch springs. if the dirt racer clutch plates are good enough, i might be able to get away with just a higher grade set of springs. i'm gonna call both powroll and hotrods to place the orders so that specific questions can be answered. since you have already rebuilt yours, you might be able to get away with just the crank and piston. i've found the piston for 288 and the crank/rod assembly for 370. i'm still going to keep shopping around to make sure i can find the best price.

Yep keep us posted, I am wanting to do one myslef in the future. Might have to hire you to help since your close enough to me....

Were you speaking of dirt digger clutch?..i have one of them..they are strong also with stiffer springs in it!!

The stock warrior clutch is plenty strong enough, it holds the 400 strokers no problem. If you notice the blaster and banshee clutches are considerably cheaper, goes to show how beefy ours is. You must remember that yama made a utility quad out of the same motor back in the day. With my current mods I haven't had a slip yet, and pretty soon I'll be pushing 50 hp easily with the nitrous activated. I'll let you know how well it holds in a week when I do the first trial with a 10hp shot.

hire? ****, if i can get mine done without a hitch, i'll do yours for free. you just buy the parts. i'll be the "test subject" and do mine first.

i am pretty sure that i have the ebc dirt racer clutch. let me double check. i thought that barnett made the dirt digger
