i have some dumb questions about a gps. we know of some people that recently opened up an atv park. they have a lot of work that they want done, but they dont have the time. since my dad is retired and i work from home, we are going to see if we can do some of the work and in return we can ride for free. one thing that they probably need done is to get all the trails mapped out. if i had a gps, could i basically just ride and have it "record" my route and then maybe download it into a computer for editing or even just printing? it would be a pain in the @$$ to try to map out the trails with pencil and paper. if anyone knows if a gps could do this, let me know. also, if you recommend a particular gps, that would be greatly appreciated. since we would be taking it wheeling, i dont really want to pay a lot incase it gets dumped in mud or whatever.

my dad bought one for about 100 bucks that can do what you asked, i'll find out tomorrow what kind it is, i know he bought it at west marine.

that's a little bit more than i was hoping to spend. i havent researched any of the gps units, so i really dont know what an average price is though. i was hoping to stay around 100. i'll check ebay to see if i can find that one on there. amazon is showing an average of about 190. is that about what you paid?

that sounds about right, the etrex vista is super nice, but thats exactly what you need. the lower end gps's dont have the capability to print out a map type deal that you are talking about, you need one with a computer program, i know theres probably some cheaper ones that do the same, but you could use that gps for all your other need, there waterproof, tough, and if you hunt/fish/camp there awsome too have around too

being waterproof would be excellent. we would probably mount it to my dads utility since he doesnt ride very hardcore and would less likely to accidentally fall off. if the guys at the atv park want us to "work" for them, maybe pops would go in half on it since it is something that we can both use in the future. thanks for your input.

I think my buddie has one ..not sure what it is but i will ask when he gets back in town...i think he wants $65 for it

If you end up getting the Vista, here are some tips:Dont get the new color version, its more money.Dont waste your money on the Garmin mount,it shakes and rattles way to much.Try to get a RAM mount for your bars, extremely tough and solid mount. It will work on your quad and your truck.I have a topo program for different areas,so that I have a mount on the left-hand side of my dash in my truck for our 4x trail/camp trips.I am getting one for my quad, sometime soon. Then you just swap over the cradle and your set.You can buy some good computer software for cheap on Ebay. After you download it to your computer, hook it up to the Vista-the memory on it will hold lots of maps, etc.Garmin's software is very good. The extra clams for the Garmin Vista is worth it.Hope this helps.

thanks jccruiser78. i really appreciate all the info.
