heavy throttle

I recently picked up another quad for myself and I am trying to get my warrior set up for my girlfriend. I took the twist throttle off and installed a stock thumb throttle. I rode it around for a while and my thumb hurts like hell after a few min. It is the heaviest thumb throttle I have ever felt. Is there a problem or is this normal. I need to get it as light as possible for her but still safe. Thanks
