ok i rode with it for awhile cuz I thought it was doing ok with know jeting, today I took the spark plug out and its black, way to rich the hmf company says to drop the clip one notch, my question is wheres this clip or does anyone a have a pic of it?

oh by the way its got a stock airbox if anyone ask.

if you main jet was right on then I would say yes drop a clip on the jet needle. A lot of people won't tell you that the main jet is effecting fuel flow at mid throttle points.

thaks for the reply, but where is this clip I heard it was just a plastic washer is this true that you remove is this true?

On top of the carb under the diaphram in the slide. I would move the clip before ******* with shims.
I would make sure the main jet is on.

ok not to sound like an idiot but how do make sure the main jet is on? All i know is I put the hmf slip-on on there and ran my bike through a half a tank and the spark plug is black, everything else is completly stock, so i got on the hmf web site and it says to drop the clip one notch but the way i understand it there is only one notch the begin with on the 07s?

I see. This is why they say take the shim out. The main jet is tuned by starting rich then step down one size at a time. The the bike wide open throttle and on the richest jet you should hear or feel a miss or stutter at high rpms. Back one size down at a time until this goes away. Once you do that more often then not your jet needle and main will be spot on.
Do you have any poping on deccl?
You didn't buy an air filter or any sort of clamp on?

nope no poping or anything. I haven't got one yet, it will be another week or 2 before i can. i have drilled holes in the airbox lid for now but their only 4 of them and they are only about a 1/4 in. i was just conserned on how black the plug was.would the holes make it run a lil rich?

it would lean it out. I would maybe try a few more and then you won't have to screw with the carb.
Get your hole saw out and make those 1 1/2 holes. Bigger the better.

ok will do, thanks a lot for the help! taking the airbox off would probbaly be too much air without re-jetting wouldn't?

If your plug is black you are running rich, as you know, and dropping your clip on your needle is going to make you richer. The clip on your needle determines where the needle sits, by dropping the clip down one notch it raises the needle out of the seat, which allows more fuel by, making it richer. I would do what Jason said and just allow more air in and then you will not have to mess with the carb.

What is your elevation and temps right now. Remember higher temperature, higher elevation and higher humidity will all make an engine run richer than it will in low temp, elevation or humidity.

i live in north mississippi and i think its around 500-600 feet above sea level, and its been about 100 during the day and 75-80 at night but when i rode after i got the pipe on it was at night at about 78 and 20% humidity

Raising the needle out of the seat leans it out because it blocks more fuel coming from the jet. But I wouldn't do that because that only affects 1/4 to 3/4 throttle, full throttle will still be rich. I would suggest to rejet it after you get a filter.

Wrong. Lowering the needle makes less fuel come out of the main jet or needle jet.

I think I understood "lowering" wrong, to me, lowering the needle would be moving it towards the sharp end, which would richen it.

Hehe...

Lowering the clip, and lowering the needle are exact opposites

Lowering the clip = Raising the needle (more out of the emulsion tube) = richer

Raising the clip (higher on the needle) = Lowering the needle more into the emulsion tube = leaner

Crap, I meant clip when I said needle in my last post. Disregard everything I've said,I'll shut up about carbs for now.:)

if the plug is black you are to rich, which i dont think will hurt the engine nearly as badly as being lean (someone correct me if I am wrong) If its not going to hurt the engine I would wait to rejet until you instal the new air filter. It just may run a lil funny until you rejet.
