I bought a totally stock 87 that had a bad motor and previous owner swapped in new motor and lost interest so he says. How can I tell if he used the correct 87-89 flywheel instead of the newer 90+ one? One flywheel says 7211 and other says 6511

I just went through this problem with the 98 my boys friend just bought the po swapped in a 87 motor and he just changed the stator to a 98 so we werent getting any spark so I pulled the flywheel and put in a 2nd gen one and she fired right up
I believe the 87 flywheel had more holes by the timing marks than the 2nd gen one and more weights I can get some pics for ya tomorrow of the 87 flywheel if what I just told you don't help

I didnt even pay attention to what my 88 said... If you dont have an answer by the weekend, ill look at mine... I forgot to swap mine to the new style...

the 87 & 88 have this extra weight welded to them where my thumb and fore finger are pointing
the numbers on the 87 are6311 and the 88 is 7811 so I don't think those numbers will help but the 6 digit number/letter is the same on both the 87 & 88 and that # is F3T435 I don't have a 2nd gen flywheel out to get #'s but I do know the little extra weight welded on the 1st gen wheel isn't on the 2nd gen ones
the 87 wheel has 5 drill holes by the weight and the 88 has 3 drill holes by the weight
hope this helps Geees

I got a 2nd gen one out if ya need numbers GS4...
