I was adjusting my pilot screw and was wondering how many turns I should do and if there is anyway I can tell it is too lean or too rich. Its about -3degrees C out here and plus I have a pipe.

Start with the screw at about 2 turns out. Start the engine, and turn it out until the idle gets rough, then turn it back in until it's smooth again. That should get it adjusted pretty good.

Like what sounds will it make if it lean? And Rich? I don't know what what sounds like. When I took her out for a test boot today, after letting off the throttle it would backfire.

Popping/backfiring is lean. If you keep turning the fuel screw out and it doesn't start to idle rough you need to go up to a bigger pilot jet.
