So I was sitting in bed thinking of the old days, and remembered grinding down the ends on our shift stars to get smoother shifts..
I decided to get up, and type it off my mind. lol

Now I woulda done the star mod on my 490, but some cheese dick welded the star to the drum. :loco:
Anyway.. I was curious if anyone has ever done this on their warrior?? If so was there any noticeable change??

It's such a simple mod. All you need is a grinder, and 30 minutes of your time.
But it's old school, and nobody ever talks about it anymore..

smooth shift in = smooth shift out of gear also. IE falling out of gear.

and if you don't do your mod right, your fucked.

I'm with dead on this one. I think there is a reason why it has been left in the good ole days. Lol.

Well I was thinking its a forgotten art..

You don't want to remove a lot of materiel from the ends of the star. You just want to round it (knocking down any high peeks), and make it a smoother transition.
The wheel holds the star in place when your in gear, you would have to remove a lot for it to jump outta gear!

Be skeptical if you guys want. But I've done it to a few different machines in my day.
Some didn't make any difference. But on my Banshee it made a huge difference! Thats why I mentioned it.

Having a small bench grinder would make short work of the task.. lol

I would like to see someone try it, just to hear if it helped or not?

If I had a spare one I would use my dremel and smooth it out slowly

Well I always used a die grinder to do it.
If I remember correctly most yamaha shift stars look the same.. Theres about an 1/8" inch of material above the fingers. We used to remove about 1/16th, and put more of a radius on the end of the star.. Do all of them except the first/neutral end (the moon shaped one).

If you do this correct, you should feel a noticeable difference in your shifts.

Hmm... now that you esplained it better, I can see where it may help. Not having as much peek to lift over, as well as allowing it to roll over the star makes sense.
