Motor noise

Never had a problem in 7 years. Today I cranked up and at idle I hear a clanking noise about every 7 seconds, sometimes in different intervals though and the idle changes. In gear at any speed it doesn't do it, only at idle. Power seems fine, no smoke or problems while riding, only at idle but it doesn't sound good, a clicking noise changing the RPM's, anyone ever heard of this?
