So im about to put my new piston and rings in my 350 raptor and a buddy of mine who has rebuilt his 400 ex like 3,000 times tells me to make sure the ring gaps have to be put in the right spot. Anyone know anything about that or have tips on where to put the gaps??

Just look from the top of the piston and think "pie cut into thirds" that should put you in the right area. Need not be exact. As long as the ring gap is not stacked on top of each other you should be fine.

Yup, lets call the front of the engine 12o'clock. The expander oil ring goes on 1st & it should butt together @ 9 o'clock, then the oil retention rings that kinda retain the expansion ring go on, the bottom retention ring clocks about 4-o'clock & the upper retention ring about 2-o'clock. The 2nd compression ring goes at 12o'clock & the top compression ring at 6-o'clock.
Also remember to look at both of your compression rings to see if they if they have any markings near the end gap. If they do, that's the side of the ring that goes up. If they don't have any markings then it doesn't matter UNLESS THE COMPRESSION RINGS HAVE A BEVEL, THE BEVEL MUST BE UP.

Good lookin out! I forgot about the marks and/or bevel!

There is a specific location/orientation described in the Yamaha Service Manual, that is (12 o'clock is the front of the engine) an altering of the gaps at 1:30, 4:30, 7:30, and 10:30.

Personally, I use the method tested by Ford. (Unless there is a Gap Locator pin, like on a 2T) I know Ford has a number of other issues, but they were right on when they tested and got results that the gaps are in a better position on the "Non Thrust Side of the Piston."

So that means to you, to alter all of the gaps between the 7:30 and 4:30 positions.

i.e......bottom oil ring....7:30, top oil ring.....4:30, Bottom Piston Ring......7:30, Top Piston Ring.....4:30. Gap in the Oil Carrier ring.....anywhere.

Good Luck....
