Is it a pop from the exhaust, or could it be a clunk from the motor?

No it's lean if it was flooding it would surge, not start, or just bog out during WOT run to idles or on the down shift; this time of year with drastic temperature changes requires everyone to richen the fuel mixture. In extreme lean situations you will get a pop from the carburetor/intake area (we call this a hiccup) and from the exhaust as well while trying to start it; The hard starting (not starting and staying started in the first 3 cranks) is a dead indication of improper/off jetting.

The hiccups, hard starting, & stalling may go away as you get the quad warmed up but the popping will still exist from time to time or frequently while you ride. It is important you do not ride it like that and you must jet accordingly before you ride again in these temperatures.

It wasn't this year that it was making that noise it was when I was riding, in the summer, and my plug is brown anyway.

You can use plug colors as a general reference when determining proper fuel mixture, but in today’s age with all the additives in gasoline it should not be used as a sole determining factor; you must jet until the bike starts, idles, & runs correctly regardless of what the color of the plug is.

Also check for any cracks in the intake manifold & intake boot, make sure your clamps are on the carb/boot/airbox snugly, check to make sure that the filter is on correctly and clean before jetting... Don’t just poke your head in there and look, take the gas tank off…
