How do I know when a rear shock goes bad? What makes a rear shock go bad?

Mine squeaks a lot everytime I push down on the back of the quad. I need to know what and when a shock goes shock bad. Judging by the squeaking that I'm getting, would a simple fix of having the rezzie canister being refilled be the right fix?

the squeeking is most likely the rubber bushings in the dog bone and upper and lower shock eye bushings spray them with some lube my 02 sqeeks like a mf and all I do is spray all the bushings and joints with lube and it stops for a while anyway lol

But what makes a shock go bad? I might as well find out everything about it before I go wrenching lol

you'll know if seals are leaking there will be oily leak spots near the shiny rod in middle

If you push down on the grab bar and the rear bounces up and down like a pogo stick it's blown. When you push down and let go, it should return to it's original posistion with out pogoing.

Does it matter what lube I use on it? I've got some (can't remember what it is), do I need anything special?
