Today while riding around for fun. I was resting my foot on the shift pedal, and it downshifted without using the clutch, so I was messing around and noticed it downshifts only @ a certain RPM but I can upshift anytime without the clutch.

now my question is: Is shifting without the clutch going to hurt anything? Like.. There have been times where using the clutch has hurt my momentum(mostly downshifts) so in situations like that, would I be okay not using the clutch to either downshift or upshift?

EDIT: This is the first time I have ever done/wondered this. I dont plan on using it, just a question.

you can shift without using the clutch, but I recondmend not doing it unless you like replace tranny componites like shift forks

Thanks for input- Ive been searching other websites as well, it seems to be almost 50/50 some say if you let off the gas then up-shift its okay, some say not to do it at all. 95% say never down-shift without clutch, I kinda figured the down-shifting was bad, but ill wait to see if others chime in on up-shifting without clutch

I'm a big believer in the logic of, "the clutcch is there for a reason, use it!"

Why take the remote chance of dicking up your tranny. If I wanted a centrifugal bike, I'd buy a Honda.

Ya you can shift with not clutch I do it a lot just let off. My old motor 4 has no clutch well not a clutch lever. Same motor and tranny

There's little pegs about the size of a pencel that hold the tranny gears engaged and shiting without clutching can break them off and throw chunchs around and if those get into the rest of the tranny gears you just destroyed about 600 bucks of tranny parts if you get em used and totaly screwed the shift forks and you can forget riding that thing home

alot of times i dont use the clutch... you really dont need it if you understand what is happening inside your tranny... hell there are times i dont use the clutch in my car... downshifting is harder only because the motor ideally should be revved between gears and thats pretty much impossible of a warrior... but in my car i can do it all day long... of course they are not the same transmission but as long as the gears are switching smooth and not grinding your fine... that being said i am not goign to rebuild your tranny when you destroy it from not letting off the gas and smashing gears

hehe you said shiting without clutching bwahaha

car trannys have synchronizers to speed up the next gear, and they are helical cut. You can get by if u know wat u are doing. atv trannys have dog engagements and straight cut gears. they are small and fragile. lets just say bent shift forks and cracked third gear caused a 1200dollar pc frame resto on my warrior. if u just fix the trans it is still a MAJOR pain. and not cheap

Clutch it at all times. Better to do that and never worry about the tranny then the other way around. Least that's my opinion.
