I have a 2000 warrior that i am trying to tune. Guts are stock, stock bore etc. has a crotch rocket pipe and no air box. it has a cone filter with a little bracket i made covering the bottom...like half an airbox. anyway i figured it would get more air so i cleaned the carb and put 155 main jet in it, stock pilot. it runs good when its reved up but if i punch the gas in low rpm's it stalls. just like when it's not warmed up. All i can think is that i need a bigger pilot jet. i've played with the fuel/air mixture but it didn't help. any carb tuning pros out there who can give me some pointers?

thanks,
-calvin

try turning up your idle, should be set between 1600 and 1800 rpm. And stock warriors are a little lean on the pilot jet. stock is 42.5 one size up 45

Im def. not a pro at this haha but the stock carbs suck for low end punch. Try doing the accel pump mod by installing a stiffer spring out of a ink pen. the stock spring barley does anything. And yes i say one size up on the pilot jet and go from there.

i have the idol set about right. it tries to die if you punch it lower than about 2000-2500rpms. I've heard about the ink pen mod i think i'll try it but i don't think it will solve my problem. I think i will jump up a size for the pilot jet. there's no way its getting too much gas, right?

It could be... Like if you oiled your filter to much it will suck the oil in with the gas and it will cause a lean condion... I did the same thing with my 87

i didn't even oil the filter though so that can't be it. I'll just keep playing with the tuning with a 45 pilot. also i may drop from a 155 main to a 150. 155 may be too much for a stock motor.

No a stock main jet is a 145. When i had my 87 i had all stock jets except for a 150 main and i messed with the needle clip, you might want to mess around with that too. The mods i had where Dg exhaust, K&N filter with the lid still on, and a wiesco piston.

I know a stock is 145, i was just saying i might put a 150 main jet instead of my curent 155. Today i took my makeshift airbox thing off and adjusted the fuel/air to 3.5 turns and once warmed up it ran pretty good. I then turned it 4.5 turns and it didn't run as good. I checked the plug after riding and it had a little bit of white crap on it. Im just gonna get a 45 pilot and play with it in the and see if that helps. I have been told before to play with the needle clip but i don't really know anything about that.

sounds like you have not got enough vaccum, an unoiled filter has no resistance to flow compared to an oiled filter.

If you lower the needle clip position it will raise the needle and make it richer soon due to the taper starting out sooner.

I would find an airbox if I where you and a standard filter w/ oil.

the sport bike pipe was probably designed for 600cc-750cc. I think if you start over with regukar upgrades you woud be further ahead

those are good points. right now I have shy of 600 bucks in this thing so I don't really want to spend the money on a pipe and stuff. Maybe I will later on. The only reason I don't have an airbox on it is because the pipe is directly in the way of the airbox and that's how it was when i bought it (didn't even have a filter). I haven't oiled it because its an eBay filter and i didn't know if it could be oiled, but i have k&n oil. People run their warriors without the airbox lid a lot, that can't be a lot worse than what I'm doing.

It isnt gonna hurt to not run an airbox. Itll make more power but you'll have more of a chance to suck in water and the filter will get dirty faster. I think Kyler runs his with no box and the filter directly on the carb. But his is not even close to stock bore and/or carb.

yeah I want to mod some kind of airbox. I may just buy a stock one and cut it and glass it to fit with the pipe. With the kind of riding I do I really need something to keep crap from splashing on the filter. I had a monster can cut in half long ways bolted on to protect the bottom of the fliter but it made my bike look too ghetto. Also i found out my pipe is off an 05 r1, that's a big pipe for a little warrior. I found an fmf titanium 4 pipe that i can get for 50 bucks but i don't know if its worth the 2 hour drive to get it.

I ran without one for yrs

Got sick of sucking up water, now I have an airbox, no lid

I like the set up you had. I may try to rig something like that up and put as much of an airbox as will fit around it. as of now now mine is right on the carb.

least run a clean and oiled filter with a precharger if your gunna run no box. Hell, I run that and have the box buy no lid. I still get leary in heavy water areas.

elwood, do you still have that set up with the bracket and stuff, if so would you sell it?

And I will oil up my filter for sure but i can't really get a prechrger for it because its a china brand and a weird size. I'll get a better setup later though.

they are running with a high density foam filter with really thick filter oil.

try this: put a few layers of old socks on the filter and if need be start wrapping duct tape around the sock till you get better response out of the carb if for nothing else learning purposes.

Sorry I want to keep it for now, all it is, is a truck exhaust piece flaired out at both end and a tap welded on for mounting. Filter is on 1 side and the boot that goes from the airbox to the carb on the other

ok well that sounds pretty easy to set up, do you think adding the pipe between the filter and carb would make a real difference? I can see how it might keep the air a little cooler but not much. And I don't know about the sock and duct tape but I see what you are getting at.
