ok so i got my motor all apart since i am in the middle of a rebuild. before i tore the bike apart it had a hard time starting. not to bad. it would take a couple of cranks but there was a pretty loud clunking noise. it would start and if it didnt as i would just let go of the starter button you could clearly hear the clunking rotatiing. Now i took apart the case and the starter gear has all the teeth. But i can stick my fingers in there one finger or 2 on the bottom of the gear and 1 or 2 on the top of the gear and pull the gear in and out just a smidge. It moves in and out like its loose. Is it supposed to be like that and what could keep it tight? wondering if that is the noise im hearing.

that noise you are hearing is the clutch inside the gear going bad. i would replace it.

ok thats in the starter or on the gear? i got a pretty decent knowledge of this motor but havent messed with this part yet.

in the gear. i would replace the whole assembly. more expensive but 800000000000000000000000000000000000000000x easier.

ok but what about the play in that gear ...it doesnt wiggle or anything just slides in and out about a 1/4 inch or so..

when you say replace the whole thing...i should just get a starter clutch? or is there a full kit? sorry for the questions bro. just wanna do it right once

starter clutch and gear ready assembled to install. the gear and the clutch is very, very, VERY hard to get apart.
