starting problem

hey just joined the forum..just bought a 87 warrior i can get it to start but its weird. when u pull the pull start a few times something clicks and engages and makes it hard to pull. electric start pretty much same way something engages and stops stater and i can pull on pull start a lil and it will disenage something and start...what can this be? i appreciate any help

could be the decompression lever but sounds like something in the motor
