recently ive had starting problems, 2000 warrior. i figured the clanking sound was going to be from the one way.. i pulled it apart and visually it looks ok, seems to lockup nicely, and the races on the stater assembly and the starter gear look to be in decent shape.. minor pitting and wear. could it be the one way spring has stretched? its weird it seems to crank ok when theres no throttle but when i open the throttle up slightly motor sounds like its clanking. any helps appreciated. once the bikes warm it'll fire right up with the touch of a button, litterally

It's ok for the engine to make a clunking sound, just as long as it's turing over fast enough, and at a steady speed. When they fail they either turn over a few times, starter freewheels a little, then it turns over a few more times and freewheels again, or the starter just freewheels all the time and never engages.

If it's turning over at a steady rate i'd look at jetting or valve adjustments as possible causes

it has freewheeled before, sounds like the one way just sits there spinning, and the clunking sound really doesnt sound right, i just dont understand why itd only clunk if the throttle is cracked

yeah i have heard it in person and it sounds really bad like a really loud "clunk" noise

It probably only clunks when the throttle is open because it lets the engine turn over easier, so there is less load being put on the one way. When the throttle is closed and the one way has more load it locks in and stays locked in, instead of grab, release, grab, release, which is what you hear when it's clunking.

Did you check all your gears for damage? And was the starter ever rebuilt? When my starter needed a rebuild it was turning over slowly and making a louder than normal clunking sound, and sometimes it would slip and seem like it was freewheeling because there wasn't enough torque to make the one way grab properly. It had me frustrated as all hell because it happened about a month after the one way was replaced, so I immediately assumed that we made a mistake replacing it.

thanks YamaRider, yeah that will be something to check before i replace the oneway/starter gear. oh and all the gears appear to be in perfect shape.

turns out it was the starter motor itself, if anyone has similar symptoms check your starter motor! might save yourself from pulling apart the flywheel and such for nothing ;D
