I recently swapped all my electronics to an 01 from an 87 because of a spark issue. Well my question is do I have to redo the timing because im using the 01 magneto. Did the timing marks change throughout the years on the flywheel? I have fixed my spark issue, it will start and run but backfires and pops horribly as sson as you touch the gas, carb has had fresh rebuild, so its not a carb issue.

The flywheels are different, and you need to swap them. If I remember correctly, Ed, magneto refers to the stator.

The flywheel and magneto are the same thing, I have all 01 equiptment in my machine, the motor is timed to the 87 flywheel. The question was should I retime it???

Ok, I redid the timing, and I still have the same issue of backfiring and popping when I touch the gas. Im lraning back toward a carb issue. Keep in mind I just did a carb rebuild with all new jets and seals and im pretty positive its done right. Help!!

Im trying to upload a video to show you guys what it does and what it sounds like when I touch the throttle. Im having trouble uploading a video from my tablet. Any ideas on how I do it?

did you plug those damned clutch safety wires into each other? Thats what it sounds like to me. The 01 has that safety switch to the clutch lever and the first gens didn't have and if you just tape them off without completing the circuit it will seem to be backfiring or hitting a rev limiter is what mine seemed like. I am pretty sure if you plug those two wires into each other your problem will be resolved. (I had the exact symptoms as you and pulled my hair out for a week.)

I will check that out, im prety positive I have them connected but I will make sure in a little bit and get back to you guys. It does kind of sound like a limiter, but did your backfire and pop too?

Also, is it even possible to get the timing marks lined up perfectly? I always seem like I cant only get it close. But its always off just to the left or right by a bit.

Brand new d.i.d. Chain, new tensioner, new chain guides, idk. I did everything according to the book, twice now. What am I doing wrong?
