My wifes machine was backfiring through the carb so I figured it was the timing. I took the cam cover off and it was off by almost 2 teeth. I tried to get timing dead on but couldn't the closest I could get it was half a tooth past the mark on the head. Because of that adjusting the valves was a real pain. But I fired it up and the backfiring was greatly reduced only did it once or twice in about 5 min.

My question is because I couldn't get it dead on does that mean the chain is stretched?

Is it gonna hurt anything running it off by half a tooth?
 
I have to take the whole top end off to swap the chain don't I?
 
Oh I forgot to mention that the tensioner is not even half way out to make the chain tight.
 
I think I fixed it by adding fuel, i'll run it longer tomorrow to check for sure.
 
Doesn't matter they will still line up with a Vito's key. It moves the flywheel so the chain will move with it.

Right, you still will be able to get the timing marks close to set cam timing. The key sets the postion of the flywheel and the crank gear drives the cam chain.
 
there is a timing mark on the cam chain sprocket on the crank and on the crank case just above the sprocket ... line them up put the key in and slide rotor on

The Vito's key changes ignition timing, NOT mechanical timing. The mechanical timing may appear to be off when you go to set timing, that is because on the 4* advance on the flywheel. That is why you do it the way Bones showed it. If all you are doing is installing the key and not taking the chain and cam gear apart, you only need to pull the flywheel and swap keys.
