got a problem. i'm trying to take off the top end on my motor. i'm going step by step with the clymer manual. i've got the valve covers and cam sprocket cover off. i'm turning the crank couterclockwise to line up the mark on the cam chain sprocket with the mark on the head. the problem is that i can get the marks about 1/2" away from each other and then it locks up. i tried going clockwise and it gets about 1/4" away. i dont want to force it unless that is what you are supposed to do. i'm waiting on the yamaha dealer to call me back, but if anyone has any advice, let me know.

thanks

when yamaha called back, they said not to worry about it being top dead center since i'm rebuilding it and only to worry about it when i'm putting it back together. he said there could be a bent valve or something that was causing the bind. got the top end off so maybe later i'll start disassembling that can of worms.

Also mind you that TDC is to be set on the compression stroke. Not sure if you've gotten that far in the rebuild yet, but it's something to keep in mind.
