I'm really bored so I'm thinking of what performance parts I'm going to buy for the z400 when I get it. I've already decided on a full yoshimura trs exhaust. Heres the question, what do you guys think of the K&N powerlid

I ride from dusty roads, across rivers/creek crossings and some mud. It comes with a prefilter also, so do you guys think it would allow a good increase in airflow without letting water/mud in there? Another question, whats the big deal about a pro design intake? They are like 80 bucks but all it is is an air filter with that aluminum adaptor? I dont see how thats worth 80-90 bucks.

The purpose of the clamp-on filter kits is the same for every bike that doesn't come clamp-on from the factory. The stock setup can easily allow dirt and contaminants to slip past the filter where it seals against the airbox. The clamp-on kit may be a few more dollars initially, but if it keeps mud and dirt from getting sucked into your engine one time, it just turned into a VERY worthwhile investment. My buddy's eiger uses an airbox design similar to just about every suzuki, where the filter seals against the side of the airbox. One time it appeared to be installed correctly, but when he took it off, inside his intake tubes was mud, dirt, a stick, and some other fun stuff. Not good, a clamp-on filter would have not allowed this to happen.

The k&n powerlid seems like a big scam/ripoff to me. It adds a second filter to your setup, more filters obviously equals more restriction and less power. All you need is a good clamp-on filter kit with an outerwears, and you won't have to worry about crap getting into your engine.

Are you saying I could run no lid with a clamp on kit with outerwears and be alright?

Yeah, you'll be fine unless you get into really deep stuff. If you get into stuff that might be over the airbox then you should leave the stock airbox lid and snorkel on. But any water or mud that gets splashed onto that outerwears will just bead right off, and it could even be partially submerged and your filter would remain dry. Outerwears are pretty amazing, they're waterproof enough that you can fill one with water and use it like a drinking cup, and they have virtually no airflow restriction.

There's no airbox lid on my quad in this pic -

That's about as far out as I dare to go though, that mud hole is known to be somewhere between 4-9 feet deep in the middle depending on how much rain there is ;D. Might even be a few lost jeeps in the bottom of it.

I was talking to a guy from another forum and he said that people have put together their own pro design kit for 35 bucks. It was for a z but I'm sure it could be done for a warrior/rappy also. He said that autozone sells the flange like piece that comes with the pro design kit and then you can buy the k&n or uni and he says it works. He said someone done a tutorial of it but then they deleted it for some reason. I looked for a few minutes last night but couldnt find the piece but I'm sure they sell it. He said if you go to autozone its in the ricer section along with the matching filter. It would be a great alternative, if only I could find the parts.
