we had a 660 in our pack on the trails.. i never liked it cuz it was top heavy SUPER powerful and in general heavy to pull out of ruts by hand..

the 400 is a little slower but it has decent power and its SUPER light.. still a little top heavy probally ciuz its so light but I chose the 400 over the 660 when i had the chance..

the only thing that blows the 400 outta the water is the durability of the 660.. yamahas quads can have the **** kicked outta them and rolled and rolled and rolled..they will start right up and come out with bent plastic :D 400s are less "tank-like"

my vote is for the 4hundoex

Seems to be even between the 660 and the 400.

Out of all my research, the Yamaha and Honda seem to be the easiest for mechanical maintenance, mainly valve adjustment. The Z, DVX, and KFX all share the same engine and the valves have to be shimmed.

Also I have found that the 660s carbs are finiky. Seemingly needing random adjustments out of the blue. Anybody have any info to chime in pertaining to this? I do like the fact that it is liquid cooled, however one more thing to go wrong and leave you stranded. But I dont like the tranny issue. Seems that the 2nd gear problem is mostly in 01, and most upgraded there 01 to 02+ parts as Yamaha took notice and corrected the fault in the latter year. Not seeing much info on tranny problems from 02 and up. Any one know about 02-up trannys having issues, or issues with the cooling system such as water pump/thermostat?

The 400EX seems to be bullet proof, just as the Warrior. Havent been able to find any common problems or issues regarding them.

Ended up with a 05 400EX. $1500, runs GREAT! Almost showroom new. Only needed back tires, and to up the Pilot jet to help with cold weather starting. All the tires are the original Ohtsu that came on it when it was new. Fronts are still 50-60%. Rears are like 10-15. Its a BEAST compared to the warrior!

I appreciate everyones contribution to this thread, I went out and looked at everything I asked about, and really the history of reliability was the biggest factor. I really liked the looks of the 400 over everything else, except for the 660 of course. But an extra carb, and water cooling... just something else to go wrong.

I put pics up in the pics thread. Followed by the story of how and why I got it so cheap. Its long, but a good read no less.

glad your happy with it!.

I love water cooled bikes... side by side same CC engines a water cooled bike will always put more ponies out and you can leave the idling for as long as you want with no worry of over heating and air cooled vs liquid maintained the same the liquid cooled bike will almost always last atleast twice as long in between rebuilds.
then again i'm a 2 stroke fan so i must enjoy rebuilding motors lol
