I not sure exactly what happened, but last fall when I took it out riding, the bearings apparantly blew apart inside the axle.

The bearings were riding between the inside of the carrier and the outside of the bearing spacer that is on the axle.

Mine looked the same way I slapped new bearings in mine and never had an issuse, as long as the axle its self didnt suffer any damage then I think your alright

The axle looks ok (bottom pic), I think the spacer completely covers it inside there.

I didn't notice any signs of oil or grease in the housing, was there supposed to be any? I'm guessing there should since there is a oil seal that goes on.

If I install a zerk fitting in the top, how do I know if I have enough grease in it? I obviously don't want to much were it would start pushing out on the bearings/seals.

yea like already said as long as the axle is good, and the surfaces of the axle housing where the bearing sit are good, id say you would be alright.

i would put a zerk fitting in there. i have one and the bearings were in there 5 years before i got the quad, and i have had it five years on top of that and they have not ever given me any problems

all i do with my is pump grease into it until some comes out of the end of the axle housing (which is usually on the sprocket side). it doesnt hurt the bearing at all, but it could push the seal out but i have never had a problem at all. sometimes after i ride in deep water and the put grease in, it will push water out then grease will come after all the water is out. hope this helps

Ok, I'll get the old bearing races out then clean it up and install the new ones.

Thanks.
