Its a recent trade so Im finding out new things about it every day. At the moment it has an old K&N filter, and if you have seen in previous pics it really doesnt have a muffler at this point. It has a header and pipe the just runs straight back to where a muffler would be.

Anyways, Im doing a necessary tune up on the carb (leaking gas). Originally I was just going to buy a carb rebuild kit but now with the few mods this quad has on it Im not sure if I need the bigger jets or not. With the K&N and the rigged muffler its getting quite a bit of airflow and I have no idea if it has a jet kit on it or not due to the fact I have no stripped down the carb yet. So I give a cliff notes version and you tell me carb rebuild or jet kit.

-Old K&N filter
-Air box vents
-High flow makeshift pipe (I plan on getting a full exhaust system in a few weeks)
-Not sure what jets are in current carb

Regardless, the carb needs some sort of tune up because it is leaking gas somewhere.

I'd tear down the carb, clean it and see what jets are in it. If they're stock, I'd go ahead and get bigger jets and a new float valve. If it already has bigger jets all the better, just get the float valve.

give it a good blow out with some compressed air to clear out the jets which are causing overflows, just be careful around the float as there not very strong particularly if theyve been sat in gas for 15 or so years.
if youre gonna make up your own muffler soon consider not bothering with changing anything yet as when you stick your new back box on its gonna change the way in breathes. you may find that once you get a muffler on it, itll be fine as the guy you bought it off probably had one on and then kept it when he sold it

I think Im going to purchase a rebuild kit regardless. I need the peace of mind that the carb has new gaskets and seals and if it needs the bigger jets I will buy them separate. How come jet kits are 60+ dollars when the jets cost less than 5? I guess I dont fully understand what a jet kit is comprised of yet.

Anyways thank you guys for replying. I appreciate it alot. The forum doesnt have a whole lot of activity and Ive got so many questions day to day its cool that someone actually takes the time to answer them

Lol one of the reasons why I have never bought a jet kit to pricey rather just buy a couple jets.. And as far as activity most of it is in the eve and its slow now cause its nice out and Id rather be riding then be on a computer or phone lol theres always someone that can answer a question most of the time and sometimes not but were glad to help as much as we can and your welcome..

Ok guys its early in the morning and I stripped apart the carb and had a look. The main jet it a 148 which sounds about right for the airflow the quad is getting. However I cant find a 148 jet online anywhere. Not sure if this is just the 147.5 with the number rounded up.

Anyways, when I order the rebuild kit I'm sure it wont come with a 148, I assume around a 140 or 145 so do I need to go ahead and pick up a 148 or a 147.5? Im going to go with a UNI filter instead of the K&N so itll get a little less flow, on top of that im going to purchase an after market pipe in a few weeks.

Is the jet going to make that much of a difference? I figured if it did I would just leave the 148 in there till the pipe comes in and then Ill rejet and retune.

Im also torn between getting an outerwears or not, I know this will affect the jetting a bit.

Jet kits go up in size not down..Stock is 145 so Im guessing the jet kit will start at 147.5 and go up to 155.. And yes jetting the quad helps if you add the exhaust and air filter it will lean out so you need to jet up..
