guys some of you know that i was spliting the case to attempt to see what the deal was with 3rd gear (didnt really work and sound rattling sound), but all other gears were fine and made no noise out of the ordinary.

finally got the case split and this is what i found:

all the shift forks, including 3rd shiftfork were not bend and looked good. What i did find was a lone ball bearing in the case!
guess that explains the rattle (literally sounded like a marble in the tranny).

So if the shift forks are ok but a ball bearing is obviously out of its home, is the problem with3rd gear the ball bearing?????

I dont know, You guys know and have alot more experience than i do. What do yall think?

sorry... ummm is it falling outta 3 gear? the small ball bearing is called a "detent bearing" it is what makes the gears click... honestly im not sure where it goes without looking but thats probably at least part of your problem... let me look at some drawings online and ill try to figure out where it goes

hmmm i couldnt find anywhere where that ball was mentioned or pictured.... also i re read your post and the rattling sound was most likely NOT caused my the ball bearing.... think about it... that ball bearing is going to fall down into the oil and stay there (with any luck) if it doesnt it is going to destroy gears... even if it is moving around in the oil you wouldnt hear a rattle....

i think you better inspect everything cause you have something going on there... and that something could very well make you engine transform into a 1000 pieces of scrap aluminium

if you are going like cruising speed and hit 3rd, its like going from 2nd to neutral.
But if you are going very slow( like powerwalking speed lol) and hit 3rd, it will barley start to hook up for a second, then act like neutral, then hook up, then act like neutral. so if thats what you mean by falling out of gear....

i have the case split laying on the clutch side with all the gears in.
if i shift through the gears by hand, when you get to third, everything seems fine. shiftforks do their thing, everything moves normally, no teeth missing....
thats why im so stumped. otherwise i wouldn't bother you guys.

Thanks though. you guys are great. i really appreciate all the info you guys have given my in past posts about other things on the bike. :)

check your reverse shift drum, detent ball ,it bolts in from the top of motor, and its held in with a spring.

^what is the dentent ball? its purpose

I forgot to mention there is some wear on the shiftdrum (not the reverse one)....

the ball holds the reverse shift drum in place , theres a bolt on the right case on top, i always take mine out before spillting the cases because if you dont it will most likely fall out when apart.

? would that have any effect on 3rd gear or were you just talking about the detent ball?

yeah, i figured out the reverse shift drum detent ball setup thing.
i feel retarded now thinking it was an escaped bearing from places other than the reverse shiftdrum.

I guess im just gonna put her back together and maybe 3rd will magically work again....

well before you just slap it back together. double check your shift forks, bearings clutch, and clutch cable. i talked to my engine builder, and he really couldn't pinpoint the problem, without seeing your motor. well good luck and let us know ......

yeah, did all that and put her back together yesterday. and everything seems to be working like it should for the first time. (Can really explain but everything seems to be better.)
Clutch thingy pulls really easliy and before you couldnt move it without two hands and alot of pressure. and when you shift into third and turn the motor by hand the chain sproket turns.
Which i dont think it did before.
I didnt do anything, but i was thinking maybe something was put together wrong cuz somebody had been into the motor before i got it. there were somethings that were simi-out of place. anyway. i will put the motor in the bike soon and i guess we will see.

yeah, which part is funny? all that trouble for nothing, or my awesome atv lingo (clutch thingies etc...)? lol :D
