i think what your talking about is the starter clutch clunking. post a vid so we can be sure but i dont think you have a HUGE problem on your hands. the starter clutch clunking is a common problem to my knowledge.

^X2..
They can make a hell of a racket when there on their way out..

I believe mine is on the way out. Sounds like hell when I start it. Never changed one though. How hard is it?

its like changing the timing chain warpig; not too hard but involves tearing down the side of the engine.

well its in a shop now, but how much do they run its 45.00 a hour to just tar it apart so what would the starter clutch

The only thing thats hard about it is pull'n the mag.. You need a special puller to get it off.
Then you need to replace the bearing, and it's usually best to swap out the flywheel as well. Cause it get's chewed up by the bearing after time.
I think the play created by that wear is what makes all the racket.

your better off getting a Clymer manual and do it yourself man it'll save you big $$$ in the end

I agree.. The first time I did mine it only took me about 2 hours. It's not hard, the tricky part is getting the 6 allen screws out of the mag without twisting the heads out. :argh:

Are you talking about the one way bearing? If so I checked that when I took the starter off and it seems to roll very smooth and isn't loose at all. Would a bad starter make a noise like that? I've only worked on car starters and never heard one make noise like this
