No its held on by a clip and it slides off

You can even get fancy, and cut the the slip shaft on the foot peg off with a grinder after you get it apart.
You don't have to... It just looks better.

Is there any way to get these to work on a 1987 with the backup pull starter? If not, can I just replace the recoil with a later model cover?

You need to use the Moose Racing steel folding Banshee shifter, on bikes with pull start.

Thanks!!!! Was just on the Moose site and found it for $30.00. Any bending required or is it a simple bolt on?

If I remember it is a bolt on. I had to mod mine because of the big bear oil cooler.
