Good info to know, lol!^ I'm honestly not a huge fan of the 490 b/c of the combustion chamber issues & the 4 spd, although the 87-92 490 had a 5 spd. Sounds like this cat used an IT engine & they were supposed to be a lil more road friendly. I'm sure it's a beast but I'm a tad bias to the 465, lol!

The motor I have is from a IT490. It has a 5 speed.
I also had the head modified.
The problem the 490 had was the deep squish band. It created pinging, and hot spots in the head. I lowered the squish .020, and opened up the chamber. That lowers the comp back down a bit after close'n the gap, but I'm still gonna have to run a 50/50 mix with race gas.
And yes IT has different porting that the YZ jug, more designed for trail riding than racing.

Also the Gen 1 490's 80-84, are a totally different breed of cat from the Gen 2 85-90 (91-92 was the 500). The Gen 2 has a way different port, and intake design than the gen 1. They can make badass power if built right.

Awesome man, sounds like you have the right mill! I still wanna do some work to my YZ465 to make it more rideable. So have you conquered the "Lightswitch" powerband? It's evil fun Aint it, Lol!!!

Yah it can be unpredictable.. One way to cure that is lengthening, or shortening your headpipe.. I'm still working on that part.
Longer pipe, the powerband comes on sooner, shorter it's more in the topend.

I was also told that upgrading the coil helps the jumpy ignition problems, and helps with the erratic timing.. Nology profire is a good choice.
You also can't go wrong with a decent head mod, and some port work if you really wanna dance.

wonder if the if the 750 v4 engine outta my honda magna would fit in the warrior somehow... o_O
Too bad its shaft driven... If i dont get into riding that bike, i may just have to build a baddass kart.. hehe
