Hi there, I have an 89 warrior with some odd, intermittent issues.

Do these bikes typically allow you to start the engine in neutral, without the clutch lever depressed?

Most times, I can put the bike in neutral, the indicator light comes on, I can hit the start button and she fires up. Occasionally, the quad will be in neutral, indicator light on, and refuse to turn over unless I pull the clutch in. Odd, but not really a major issue unless its related to my biggest issue.

Occasionally, the quad will completely lose all power while driving. The engine just dies, might sputter a bit, then come right back to life. I've found that if I pull the clutch lever in and rev it, it has no problem with that. I'll put it in first or second if I'm still rolling, ease the clutch out and it completely dies again.

We came upon the idea that it might have something to do with the forward/reverse lever and it's wiring. If there's a short, and the bike thinks reverse is engaged, that could explain why it would refuse to start unless the clutch is in.

But why would that also cause me to completely lose power while driving? Is there a rev limiter perhaps, for when reverse is engaged?

I plan on digging into the harness this week when I'm not busy working evenings on top of days. I really just hope someone who's had this exact same problem can come in here and say YES, THATS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS! And just make my day like that.

Thanks for any and all help!

its probably something with the neutral safety...disconnect that and you oughta be ok
I'd like to fix it rather than just disconnect it. You're talking about the switch in the clutch lever right?

I would disable the clutch p brake and reverse safety switches that may help but sounds like you have a fuel grade issue fill it up with supreme unleaded and run it and if it dose it again its something else

I think I figured it out. Looks like the forward/reverse lever's internal switch wasn't making proper connection to ground. I took it apart, it was packed with rust and god knows what else. Cleaned her up good and it makes proper contact now. I'll be taking it out sunday to see if it made the difference.
