Well guys, I'm totally curious, has anyone swapped out their K&N drop in for a clamp on filter? Any real power gain or is it totally not worth the investment? I'm not talkin a 1/2hp here either, I'm a realist, $50-$60 or more just doesn't make sense unless there's really a noticeable gain, my guess would be that after the displacement gets over 400cc's then there's a difference.....right?

i went from a drop in to a alum airbox with half a lid and i noticed a dif.

prolly cause more air from the lid being modded though. sounds better too

Depends do you have a drop in now?

Yeah, I sure do man, modded lid too, 1" holes all over the lid, when I bought the quad the filter was in it but the lid was unmodded, I just looked @ it & thought it didn't look like it could breathe very well that way so I took the lid off. Wow what a difference! I later modded the lid with holes b/c as you all know it holds the filter secure. I was just curious if the z bend in the intake tube was much hinderence, I know it's a major bottleneck on Z400's & obviously straighter is the easiest path of resistance.

I run the RockyMountain setup with the little aluminum venturi....K&N and a outerware.....I feel it flows fine...the "Z" starts out big and tapers down....
I have been searching threads and a couple of guys swear by the clip-on deal....but you lose the water protection......not a win-win for me.
Also...without the stability of the airbox on the filter end...I would imagine that the rubber intake boot would not last long.....

peace,
Jebby

If ya don't mind me asking, what was the purpose in going to the aluminum box? I don't mean that as a smart a** question either, it appears that you still utilize the z bend going to the carb right? I don't do any mud riding, sorry, I just don't dig big mud holes so if I wanted to do the clamp-on I don't think I'd have issues with water in the engine.

I assume you are talking the clamp on kit for inside the air box? The clamp on that go right on the carb are a disaster waiting to happen. I have seen the aftermath of them falling off at the dunes. Kills an engine quickly and not worth any power gain in my opinion. I like the clamp on setup for the air box just for the fact that you get a better seal. I don't have the clamp on K&N on my Warrior yet, but did make the aluminum mount and put a Pro Design foam on there for now. Have the K&N clamp on on my Banshee and would never go back to the setup where the lid holds it in.

With the K&N and the lid off on the Banshee, the power difference is very noticeable. I would think it would be on the Warrior as well but maybe not as much.

Thanks Jebby, I will look into the Rocky Mount setup just so I know exactly what you're talking about. I totally understand what you're saying about losing the intake support & cause it to prematurely fail, 2 steps forward, 3 steps back, I don't need this thing to be any more failure prone, lol! Actually my only gripe with the quad is the power, everything else I like:)

i got it cause it looks more clean and i like the uni airfilter it takes. mainly looks.

Also run a alum air box but I run the umracing one not the cfm one and I can tell you now changing to that box and filter it breathed soooo much better then a uni style clampon inside the oem box without a lid it just didn't compaire!!! I prefer the clamp on I've seen the oem style loose a seal and eat the motor up
