My 87 seems to rev fine, but as soon as it hits the midrange it starts to spit and sputter real bad. I am thinking that it is the carb, any ideas?

your jets could be gummed up or have dirt particles in them. especially if it sat for awhile. gas these days is junk after a few months of sitting. my suggestion would be to buy a rebuild kit, a jet kit and slap it back together... especially if you have an after market exhaust. DO NOT RIDE IT IF ITS SPUTTERING. that causes the engine to heat up too much and can cause alot of damage. you can actually burn valves super easy. you could even crack the valve seat from too much heat and itll drop the valve which could possibly destroy the piston. if you dont have an after market exhaust, you can pick a stock jet kit.. they are pretty easy to find for all year warriors over 89 on EBAY.
when i first bought my 99, it would sputter through mid range. i never addressed the issue cause i wanted to was ride. which was stupid. i actually had the seat crack on me, which dropped the valve. i got lucky and only bent the valve and jus barely scored the crown of the piston. i bought a carb rebuild kit, jet kit, titanium valves, seat and springs. now she runs like a raped ape

Well I am selling the bike so I dont want to drop alot of cash in it. A kid is buying it for 550, and he tok it for a ride and it was doing that. I dont really want to drop any cash in it. I talked to a local shop and they said to pull the bowls off and stary it with carb cleaner. The bike did sit for awhile, and the guy before me beat the hell out of it. Also it did seem to get hot very quick. Ill try cleaning it before we rebuild it.

I left out an important deail, it was being ran with just a header. I didnt think it would effect the bike that much, but it can, cant it? When I got it the guy before me had a white bros R4 silencer with a piece of fence between the silencer and the header. I pulled it off because it was killing plastic and looked like crap. I was planning on replacing it also. Could this be my problem? I plan to clean the carb anyway.

yeah not having a muffler on it will make it run like crap. quads need the back pressure that the muffler produces. granted the pressure isnt a whole lot but it deffly makes a difference. get a muffler, jet kit, carb rebuild kit and that should fix youre problem. also get an air filter and new spark plug.

Well I will just tell the kid whos buying it that the bike will need all that done to fix the problem. No more test riding though lol. Do you think I will be ok to start it up to show that it runs, I wont put any kind of load on the engine.

I pulled the carb off and pulled it apaprt and cleaned it. I also slipped the silencer back on, and I cleaned the air filter foam. After I did this it seemed to run fine. I am deffinently going to tell the kid that the carb needs rebuilt, and it needs a stock silencer unless he wants to jet it. I am very pissed though, a guy who owns a local shop tried to talk the kid out of buying the bike. I went to him when I got it and he said the bike isnt worth it. He said its not worth rebuilding the master cylinders and the carb, he told me I will have to buy new ones because i will not get them to work right. I rebuilt both master cylinders and they seem fine. I am sure I could rebuild the carb and it will work fine. Sorry I am just venting lol.
