The needle height will affect the upper ranges slightly, just not as much as the idle-1/3 range. Once you get the right needle in there you probably won't have to change it based on the season, altitude, etc, it's been pretty forgiving to me so far and isn't touchy like some carbs can be. I've changed the needle one time since I bought it, when I got the piston and head porting, and I think i'm going to go back to the 18 from the 20 anyways because it's been running on the rich side by the way the plug looks.
