just don't cut any corners and get it done right the first time so you ain't taking it back apart and fixing afterwards when if you did it right the first time you could still be riding her not gonna mention any names (I think some of you guys know who I'm talking about) but yeah just Get-R-Done RIGHT the first time...lol

I think I would overlay a thin piece like was said earlier and tig weld it if you have access to a tig. With the tig you would be able to control the heat a little better. Definitely need to get it welded tight so water can't get in there any more. Rust from the inside out could compromise the strength for sure.

well i always strive for perfection, hell thats why its in pcs as it is, this all started from an axxle n carrier problem! im gonna take my time, thats all. as far as a tig, at this point i dont know of 1 but never checked around either, never really thought about interior rust, but i am now. as far as this quad goes, its most serious abuse has been sitting outside, because everthing else was in real good shape, minus lookin a litttle ruff and rusty (hence the makeover) it has axle issues which will have to b addressed, other than that it appears pretty dam tight, as always all your help is appreciated, ill post pics as i go tommorow for any input

weather sucks! ok due to weather I have decided to go ahead and do my sand blasting today as the next few are gonna be real shitty, this will give me time to get some info, materials and a TIG or a exp. welder, no need to rush it as i have plenty to do. i feel confident enough we'll get er done rite to go ahead and clean up and inspect rest of frame (all my focus was in 1 spot so far)(i dont wanna b that other guy, if its broke, **** it cover it n go:haha:) ohhhh n yes i promise i will not make it a fancy sand anchor:haha: get it:tup:

weather fucked me today no blasting, i decided im gonna HAVE it welded, my MIG aint workin to my satisfaction, dont wanna **** it up, since i got the motor on bench and no plans to rebuild, what should i check/do while its out??? it does smoke some when first started and i do see some small flakes in the filter

Not much you can do about the smoke unless you want to pull the head and replace the valve seals. But, if you do that you may as well rebuild the whole top end since you are in there and it is only 1 more bolt and the cylinder is off. You can adjust your valves, give it a good cleans, things like that.

All depends on what you want to do to it, and what needs to be done to it. Do you want to bore it out really big? Does it need to be bored out at all? Can it just be honed? Is it worth reringing and not installing a new piston? Cost of piston, depending on what mfg. Cost of gaskets and seals. Getting the head rebuilt, unless you can do it. Just something that you are going to have to research. Lets just say you can get away with a rehone. Wiseco has top end kits with the gaskets that sell for around $135. The head depends on where you take it. And in my opinion replace the timing chain when you do it, that about $45. So right there you are at $180. And if you are getting your head rebuilt why not have it ported as well? Idk what others charge, but my friend rebuilt, ported, polished, and bowl blended my head for $200. So if others are priced about the same the brings it to $380. Which isn't bad. And that's a best case scenario. Figure another $50ish? for boring if needed. You'll also need a stator cover gasket if replacing the timing chain and a flywheel puller to do it, too. Lots of options. If it only smokes on start up, and runs well otherwise, try an oil additive like Lucas and see what happens. Up to you. Hope I didn't scare ya this time, lol.

no not at all gen but when it comes to internals, i know i could do it but i would need step by step help, im very handy and mechanical, but internals i wanna say scare me a bit, and like you rattled off how many scenarios----well im completey lost there--- i would need someone to tell me that i trusted because i aint gonna learn this **** overnite. i believe i have alll tools needed also, gotta check on my torque wrench thou, havent seen it, but yea i could swing that, i mean while it out ya know and i wanna do it myself to learn more, its the choices i need help with, i could give a mechanic 8 choices on how to put pipe in the ground and he would feel the same way i do going into an engine lmao ill do some research, i over think **** and scare myself, and i gotta get this weld done, put an add on craigslist for a welder, dunno cant hurt, see what happens

Loil, didn't mean to frighten you. It all depends of what you want to do and how far you want to take it. Imo, if the head is coming off for valve seals you may as well replace the piston and rings. Especially since it is on the bench and MUCH easier to a top end there, then in the frame. You can tear it down and have a shop inspect and measure the cylinder to see if it is honable or needs boring. Then you have and idea as to dollars and cents.

I been calling this guy rite in town to do my welding and talk to him about my top end, no freakin answer or machine:argh: I heard real good things about him, maybe ill take a ride. also i may start a new thread but im thinking bout interior frame rust(i know its there) is there something i can slosh around in there to "KILL" it? i remember a product from 20 yrs ago called "rustmort" is it still around or something else???
