I have a '95 Warrior that was smoking really bad. I took the head and cylinder off and noticed the following:
The piston had real bad grooves in the skirt on both sides (rear)
Cylinder didn't look as bad. But the crankshaft is really blue on both sides of the connecting rod.
1) What would cause the grooves in the piston? Did something break?
2) Is the blue color (high heat?) something to worry about?
3) Should I just bore .020 over and throw in a new piston, and leave the rest alone?

Thanks in advance....

1. Doesn't sound like something broke but maybe got hot or just normal wear.
2. Normal. They use heat to get the pin in the crank.
3. I would. Get a Wiseco hi compression piston have it bored over .020" You would be good to go. You could get some custom gaskets to bring the deck height down if wanted to give you more compression as well with thinner gaskets. This would give you more torque and all around power.

Jason....think the blue hes talking about is the smoke. That's your engine burning oil my friend. You need to do a re-bore or re-sleeve. And as JP said, go with a custom gasket kit either by cometic or versih.

Sorry if I was a little confusing. I was talking about the crankshaft itself. It looks like it was exposed to some intense heat. I hope Jason is right and its just from the assembly process. Thanks for the help!!!

I bought a Weisco 84mm piston and a Cometic gasket kit. Just have a couple more questions.
1) Should I install the gaskets dry?
2) Can I just clean the head and bolt it back on or should I have it redone? Valves ground, seals, etc.....

Trying to do this on a budget....thanks.

1) rub new oil on both sides and all over the gaskets before the install
2) not a clue

if it was me i would regring the valves and new seals put in it... i took mine to a local machine shop... for them to bore my cylinder, regring the valves, and put new seals in it was only $55

No you do not want to rub new oil on any gasket. Install gaskets dry!! Only thing you lube is the o rings.

o.. i had to put a new clutch on mine and i rubbed oil on the gasket and i have had no problem. should i expect it to screw up?

My local ATV dealer charges $65 to bore a cylinder. I didn't ask about the head. Still not sure what I'm going to do with it. Maybe just clean and bolt it back on!
Is it common for valve seals to go bad?

well if your going to get it bored you might as well get it bored to like a 400 or something.

Oil on the head gaskets and 400 or something? Dude, if you don't have proper or correct information study up, then respond. We try and eliminate false informers on this site.

If you have it apart, I would do a quick valve job. Very good chance that worn valve seals are your smoke problem. At the very least, put new valve seals in.
