I think he is referring to being able to shift from the top gear to neutral rather than going back down through the gears. My son cannot pull his shifter up but that is OK because the gears just keep going...lol. If he is in too high of a gear to pull a hill, he can push down until he gets back to first then push down to second, third, fourth (if it has one) and then neutral again.

I'm not sure that is what he is referring to though.
