i bought a 1998 warrior back in august for 100 dollars. it wasnt running and the guy said it was a carb problem. after we got it home we decided to try and pull start it with another fourwheeler. when we were pull starting it it would try to start but never would. after that i decided to rebuild the whole thing so we removed the engine and when we removed the cam and timing sprocket i noticed that there was no dowell pin in the cam. it looked to me like it was ripped out. there was a crack in the cam by were the pin went and the sprocket looked like it had alot of pressure on it. i was wondering if being out of time would cause it not to run and cause the dowell pin to rip out of the cam
any help is appreciated, thanks

You need a cam man. Look for a stock used one, cheapest option. That or find a stage one Hotcam and get a little bit more pep out your new ride.

2x that cam is shot gonna need a different line of those either a stocker or a hot cam is cheapest and you might want to make sure that can gear is still in usable if not you need either a stocker or a adjustable one from web cam

Also, hope that cam tooth that busted off isn't or hasn't reeked any havoc to your valves or piston.

Ya I figured I would have to replace the cam and gear. The piston and valves dont seem to be damaged and im guessing that the broken pin has probably made its way to the bottom of the engine. To get it out should I split the case or is there any other way?

If you lucky it got blown out the exhaust. That or its stuck up in the head some where. It wouldn't be in the transmission. You can take the clutch cover off, I'd be on that side sitting on the bottom if it fell down the cam chain slot.

^^^ wrong wrong wrong is impossible for it to be blown out the exhausts or be in the clutch cover it would be either in the bottom of the crank case with the tranny you can either take it all apart or use bad gas and flush it

Your Right, I was testing you. Hahahah. I had a brain fart. :loco:

It is imposable to go out the exhaust, now that I think about it, but how in the hell would it end up in the tranny? The cam chain slot goes down to the GENERATOR cover side thats where I'd fall. It sould be sitting in this area.

Less it was carried into the oil pass at the bottom. In that case, when you drain your oil strain it and see if its in that.

And there is 2 .5x1" oil galleys that let the return to the bottom of the cases so the oil pump can resuculate it back through the motor thats why there is a screen on the drain plug it screens the oil before it go to the oil pump so it can be in there with the tranny ..found a cam gear washer down there once..

You said the valves & piston "seem" to be ok, um....how could you know until you see & how can you see if you haven't removed the head? You could have a bent valve from the engine going out of time. Oh, btw, this mess didn't happen b/c the engine went out of time, the engine went out of time b/c of the pin failure, just trying to clear up a misconception.

I took the top end off right after I got it so I could make sure everything was alright before I spent money on a new carb. it was then that I noticed the cam

The most probable answer to why this happened is that someone put it backtogether and didnt tighten the cam gear on tightenought or they d iud nt use lock tight on it

well now, this changes everything, lol! Somehow I musta missed the part where you said you took it off. Now's the time to hit Web up for a cam and springs. I think you can get a kit from them with a new bolt & dowel too.

Thanks for the help everybody. I think im gonna just open up the case and get it out that way. The main reason im gonna do that is because its also got a stuck oil drain bolt.plus it will give me a chance to check out the bottom end. Oh and I have one more question. What all will I have to remove before I can split the case open?
