Hello everyone, this is my official first post here. I have been reading for the past 3 days off and on and have not seen this specifically so thought I would ask.

Sunday I was riding and all was good, then it started bucking and bogging down like it was out of gas or something. On its own it recovered and ran fine for another mile or so, then did the same thing. I went to switch it over to reserve and it stalled out on me. I sat for about 5 minutes trying to start it and finally it started and you could tell it was flooded. Anyway drove back to camp and all seemed fine. Filled the tank (it was almost full) and went out again. Started fine and bucked once or twice on the way to our riding spot. Once there all seemed fine and it ran great. Shut it off to take a break and it would not start again. It would spin fine but never catch. Pulled it with my other quad and it started once for about 10 seconds and that was it. Since then I have not got it to fire.

Here is the question, reading the service manual it shows how to measure various electrical components. I started at the top and worked my way down. The spark plug cap states it should read 10K ohm, well mine reads 40k ohm. I am assuming that is part of the problem, but does that even sound possible? I also think the pickup/stator is shot since I show an open when checking that. Should I get a stator and a cap or just start with the stator?

If your stator ohms at zero replace it. Personally I have an rmstator and like it. I had one issue of a wire coming out of the crimped end on the plug, but easy fix when I figured out what it was. Sounds like plug cap needs replaced also but I'd do the stator 1st. What year is your quad?

It is an 04 and I can tell it has been wrecked at some point. All of the body mounts are out of whack, the rear grab bar was pretty much destroyed and there is a "new" steering stem in place.

Also about a week ago it was running fine until i shut it off. After that it would not start with the button so we bump started it and it fired right up. Drove it back to camp and all it would do was click under the seat. Messed around with the wiring near the solenoid and it all looked good. Then I heard a loud click and it fired right up. Not sure what happened there.

I would check the plug and drain the gass out of th carb bowl because if it has water in the fuel it will sputted and not run right deffinently gonna wanna ohm the stator

yeah the way I read it, it sounds like the stator was on the way out when it would run some then maybe went completely out. I not sure. but before ordering a new one pull the old one ond check the wires on it, if you find breaks, fix them and might be good to go. also pull lightly on the wires while holding the wiring plug. I had a wire slide out of the crimped connector at the plug.

Sorry guys my mistype. What I meant to say was when testing the pickup/stator on one test I read open or infinity. That was between white/red and white/green. The other test that it asks for was between red and white/blue, there was a reading on that. According to the service manual the stator is shot. I started pulling it apart tonight and will be ordering a stator.
Also someone else on here posted that they had a similar problem with theirs and one of the wires pulled out from the connector. I wish I had that problem but all my connections were fine.

Thanks for the help so far everyone. I hate to buy parts I dont need and it seems like I am on the right path with this.

So here is the latest. I got the new stator the other day and finally had time to start putting it together tonight. Before I went to the trouble of assembly I checked out the new one with a meter and it shows fine. Installed everything, connected the wiring harness and hit the starter button. I have the spark plug out so I shoved it in the spark plug cap and placed it on the head and have no spark. The spark plug cap was giving me some strange readings when hitting it with the meter so I took it apart and found that it was corroded inside. Cleaned everything up and then it measured correctly. Still no spark. Tried a different plug and still no spark.
Now before I replaced the stator everything else checked out ok besides the stator. Could I have put something together wrong with the stator?
The troubleshooting steps say that if everything checks out ok then it is the CDI. I really dont want to start throwing parts at this so let me know what you guys think, I am stumped.

I would take everything electrical off except the stator and check for cracks in the caseings if theyy are cracked its mostlikly gotten water in it and its went bad that's what I would do first then go from there

To recap here is what I installed and the problem. I installed a new stator, mine was totally dead and the new one checks out correctly. Installed a new coil and a new CDI. I have spark but it will not start. It pops once in a while but it is not running. I checked the timing and that seems to be correct. Even when I shoot starting fluid at the carb, nothing changes. Choke on or off makes no difference. My spark plug looks ok but is not new. Am I missing something obvious?

i'd check the valves just pop the covers for and see if everything is work right in there .... and is the get wet when you try to start it ??

So I checked the valves and they are moving round and are within specs. This thing was running fine, shut it off and it hasnt ran since. Could this be a bad CDI or something? Again I have spark and the timing is correct but this thing will only sputter occasionally, it never actually runs. I also replaced the spark plug just because with no difference and yes it is getting fuel on it. Is there something like a starting circuit and then a running circuit in the electrical of this machine? Lastly I charged the battery to no avail.

Is there anybody in the St. Louis area that I could swap some parts with to see if the CDI is bad?

I replaced the CDI (twice) and the coil and have a new stator and spark plug in it. I have spark when turning it over and the spark looks bright and clean. It will only sputter and then never actually start. I pulled off the carb again tonight and went through it with no difference. Cleaned the grounds and checked the wiring. I cant find anything obviously wrong with it, but the stupid thing simply will not start. I also read somewhere to unplug the regulator and try that, made no difference. The only thing I have not tried is to pull/push start it. I might give that a go tomorrow. Does anyone have any ideas they can throw my way?

I checked all that and the specs are different from the manual. I sent an email to the manufacture of the stator/pickup coil telling them my readings from the meter and they just told me that they were different from OEM.
I worked on it some more last night and it just seems like the ignition timing is off. Is there a way that I could have installed the pickup coil wrong? I already pulled that apart once and had a look and it seems right. When I took that all apart it was over a week before I got the new stuff so putting it back together was all from memory. When I took it apart again I tried to install the pickup coil or install it differently but there was no other way to put it in there. The timing between the cam and the flywheel is correct, so I dont know what else to check. Does anyone have a picture of their pickup/stator installed? That might help me answer that question.
