Reverse lever question

I removed the reverse linkage to paint the engine, but didn't look to see how it went together. I have the parts assembled in the correct order per the online microfiche diagram.

Question is, do both ends of the spring go into the slot in the black shifter "plate" on the engine case? Does that heavy spring just serve as a "damper" for overtravel? I had to squeeze it pretty hard with vice grips to get it in the slot.

ya thats correct its so it dosent slam into gear it just slids into gear you got it right

I remember having an issue with mine when I took it off, I worked off a picture of one and got it figured out.
